The Second Annual Owen Burns Celebration is honoring John Hamilton Gillespie, the Father of Sarasota and golf. Gillespie arrived in Sarasota 125 years ago and transformed what was then wilderness populated by a few Scottish settlers into a viable village and prosperous town.
The City of Sarasota has proclaimed October 24 - 30, 2011, "Gillespie Week". Celebration events will feature a Kick-Off party on the bayfront and Palm Avenue Street party and the release of Jeff LaHurd's new book, “John Hamilton Gillespie - The Scot Who Saved Sarasota”. Monday October 24 5 - 7 pm Gillespie Week Kick-off Party and New Book Release Reception at O'Leary's Tiki Bar & Grill on the bayfront. Live music by the Jacobites Bagpipers. Free event, cash bar.
Tuesday October 25 4 – 6 pm Historic Buildings Tour and Back Porch Buffet Supper, Pioneer Park
6:30 pm DAR Roundtable, Book Signing and Reception
Wednesday October 26 4 - 5 pm Sarasota History Center Museum Tour and Jeff LaHurd Book Signing 5:30 - 7 pm Hartman Gallery Photography Exhibition Opening Reception and Book Signing. Free event, cash bar.
Thursday October 27 5:30 - 7 pm Gillespie Golf Exhibit, Reception and Book Signing, Bobby Jones Golf Course. Free event, cash bar.
Friday October 28 11:30 am - 7 pm 1st Annual Kiwanis-Gillespie Charity Golf Tournament, Serenoa Golf Club 4 - 6 pm Jeff LaHurd Book Signing, Book1Sarasota
Saturday October 29 10am & 1:30pm Trolley Tours of Gillespie's Sarasota with narration by historian Ron McCarty. Advanced reservations and ticket required. 3 - 7 pm Palm Avenue Street Party - Free event. Live music by the Jacobites Bagpipe and Drum Band, UnEven LaNes and Sarasota Music Academy. Scottish Highland Dancers, photography exhibition, vintage cars, sidewalk exhibits, complimentary high tea. Food vendors.
