Second Annual Owen Burns Celebration honoring John Hamilton Gillespie
October 24 - 30, 2011
Gillespie Week Celebration
The Second Annual Owen Burns Celebration is honoring John Hamilton Gillespie, the Father of Sarasota and golf. Gillespie arrived in Sarasota 125 years ago and transformed what was then wilderness populated by a few Scottish settlers into a viable village and prosperous town.
The City of Sarasota has proclaimed October 24 - 30, 2011, "Gillespie Week". Celebration events will feature a Kick-Off party on the bayfront and Palm Avenue Street party and the release of Jeff LaHurd's new book, “John Hamilton Gillespie - The Scot Who Saved Sarasota”.
