In honor of St Patrick’s Day, I decided to seek out my favorite version of my favorite Irish dish: Corned Beef and Cabbage. After much research, debate and input from friends, I went with my friend Joshua’s recommendation to try Pub 32—Irish Gastropub. The description of this version was mouthwatering and suggested elevated flavors for a simple staple. “Guinness and brown sugar braised corned beef served with whiskey butter braised Florida-grown organic cabbage and Irish champ (mashed potatoes and scallions).”  I’m intrigued by the concept for this restaurant and pub. The website claims it to be a ‘beacon of authenticity’ and the space certainly feels like a traditional Irish pub, complete with high-backed, cozy booths named for Irish counties and Irish blessings adorning the walls. The food is the surprise here. For those of us used to traditional American Irish fare there’s much to be lauded – a focused and flavorful menu with organic, local, seasonal touches. The Corned Beef and Cabbage turns out to be tender, savory and sweet, whilst the other specials include line-caught local Mahi with fennel and roasted garlic butter, and for the vegetarian option, a stuffed Portobello mushroom served with Florida-grown organic rainbow chard. With live Irish music most nights and a friendly staff this gastropub in South Sarasota seems a good choice for any day of the year.
