I love restaurants that are tucked away in unlikely places like strip malls. They look nondescript from the outside but the interior can reveal something unexpectedly delightful. La Scarpetta is such a place. This cozy gem of a neighborhood restaurant welcomes you in with its whimsical light fixtures (made from things like empty san Marzano tomato cans and wine bottles) and friendly service. The chef walks around chatting with the guests making food and wine recommendations and answering questions. Everyone at our group immediately thought of someone that they would want to bring here on a romantic date. The food is rustic Italian, with generous portions utilizing fresh ingredients and everything seasoned to perfection. I’m still thinking about the ‘Budino di Parmigiano,’ a warm parmesan cheese pudding with porcini mushrooms and truffle sauce. On Monday, Feb. 29, this delightful new entry to the Sarasota food scene will host a Sicilian Wine dinner showcasing an excellent wine list and delectable cuisine. Only $69 for six courses and one of those course includes stuffed sardines? I’ll race you to the reservation line.
