SRQ EAT

[EAT]  Michael’s Introduces New Dessert Menu

Michael’s On East Chef James Plocharsky has whipped up a brand new dessert menu just for the season. It includes a tangy and Key Lime Tart with pecan-graham crust, served under a layer of baked meringue, with a zing of balsamic black pepper strawberry salsa. And just say the words “flourless chocolate cake” and our watch as our napkins hit our lap. Plocharsky describes Michael’s new Warm Chocolate Cake as “Bittersweet Flourless Decadence,” a claim backed up by the dish’s additional Colombian Crunch ice cream, white chocolate sambuca and cremeux with chocolate sauce. There is also a Banana Cream Tart (with while chocolate, chunks of ripe banana, whipped cream and toffee sauce), a “Perfect” Chocolate Cake (layers of cake, mousse and ganache, whipped cream and fresh raspberries), a Blueberry Cheesecake Martini (creamy cheesecake, fresh blueberries, lemon curd, crunchy graham cracker meringue and lacquered almonds) and the ever-popular Crème Brûlée, with hints of Grand Marnier, pink grapefruit and citrus semi-fredd. If these don’t create a delightful dilemma of choice, the menu goes on to include a Mammoth Carrot Cake, seasonal sorbets and ice cream, a tasting trio of Grand Marnier and the uber-decadent Homage to Cookie Dough, an inside-out mix of vanilla and coffee Heath Bar ice cream, wrapped in chocolate chip cookie dough.

BUSINESS BRIEFS

[NEWS]  Down Town New Year’s Back On

The Downtown Merchants Association have announced that after having to cancel the popular New Years Eve downtown block party earlier this week, they are now back on track. Lack of financial support was the reason organizers Ernie Ritz and Cheryl Frampton cited when they pulled the plug to the event, which attracted over 20,000 people last year. John Simon of the Issac Group stepped forward to offer $10,000 along with another donor wishing to remain anonymous. $5,000 was also donated from Triton Companies. Larry Siegel of the Gator Club offered to pay for the band that will be playing on South Lemon. And Mattison's offered $500 along with Patrick's Restaurant. The city is still not able to help with the cost of police or public works, the biggest expenses. This year, party organizers will ask for a voluntary donation in support of the festivities.

"If you earn a dollar today for your labor—for your investments—it should be worth a dollar today and the day after…Imagine what would happen if you floated the clock—60 minutes one day in a hour, 72 minutes the next, 38 the next…you’d soon have to have derivatives, hedges and insurance schemes to figure out how many hours you’re working each day." -–Steve Forbes, president and CEO of Forbes and editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine during Wall Street Live at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota on Friday.

SRQ TALK

[TALK]  The Word from Wall Street

More than 15 of the world’s most respected financial experts weighed in on everything from the value of the dollar, the housing market and China’s economy during Wall Street Live on Friday. Mayor Lou Ann Palmer presented Forbes magazine editor-in-chief Steve Forbes—who donated his time for the event—with a key to the city. “In meeting Mr. Forbes, I got a little tongue tied,” Palmer said. “That doesn’t happen very often.”

Wall Street Live raised $180,000 for 32 local charities that benefit children, said Teri Hansen, president and CEO of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice, title sponsor of the daylong event. Here’s a little taste from Wall Street Live’s financial smorgasbord of discussion:

Event emcee Charles Githler said forecasters are predicting a 50 percent chance of recession locally in 2008. “But I think we can avert a recession nationally,” he said.

“Housing was booming even before the Fed made its mistake three years ago,” Forbes said. “When the Fed made its mistake, the housing market went on steroids.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, the next bubble to burst on the heels of the debt crisis will be China…the Chinese economy is a shipwreck waiting to hit the shore," said Joe Battipaglia, market strategist for the private client group at Stifel Nicolaus.
